Each year, on September 5th, the International Day of Charity is held to raise awareness of many sociological issues faced daily in less fortunate parts of the world. As some parts of the world are dealing with the worst effects of humanitarian crises, the United Nations deemed it necessary to have a day to increase solidarity and social responsibility toward taking action.

History of the International Day of Charity

Initially, the International Day of Charity was created in 2011 by the Hungarian Civil Society Initiative. Afterward, one year after it was created, the United Nations declared it an international holiday in 2012.

The date itself, September 5th, was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Mother Teresa spent more than 45 years giving back to those in need, especially children, which led to her receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her outstanding work. The philanthropic work of Mother Teresa should be an inspiration to everyone to give back to the less fortunate.

How to Give Back

Although individually, the impact on societal issues may be minimal, there will be a largely positive effect through contributions to charitable organizations to individuals. Below is a list of non-profit organizations focusing on aiding those in need.

In terms of giving back from a local standpoint, there are many different ways to do so. First, many religious buildings, such as mosques and churches, offer various programs to help those in the community in need.

The second way to give back to the community is through the different drives held. Typically, these drives are for food or clothing, and toys during the holiday season. However, as not everyone has been given the same opportunities, it is essential to give back whenever possible.

For food drives, donations do not cost much, but the contributions mean a great deal to the recipients of these goods. Therefore, by donating nonperishable items for as little as $10, the goods’ recipient worries less about how to put food on the table during the holiday season.

On a national level, many different non-profit organizations help those in need. One that comes to mind is Feeding America, which has a network of food banks across the country focused on getting food to those who need it. Another one that comes to mind is Americares, who focus on helping those living in poverty, crises, or disasters through medicine.

Lastly, many international non-profit organizations focus on improving the lives of those in deplorable living conditions. Here is a brief outline of the non-profit organizations’ objectives.

UNICEF’s primary goal is to aid disadvantaged children to reach their full potential. From the donations they receive from people worldwide, UNICEF uses a significant portion on children’s health, clean water, and education. Right now, most of their money is going towards their projects in Africa, where they are helping children get access to basic items that are taken for granted.

Red Cross

The Red Cross is one of the most infamous non-profit organizations, and it is known to provide adequate aid to those in need. Typically, the Red Cross comes to help when a devastating natural disaster has occurred, such as the Haiti earthquake in 2010. By doing to the Red Cross, the money is used for medical supplies on victims of natural disasters.

Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders focuses on providing medical care to humans suffering from natural or man-made disasters. Similar to the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders uses their donations toward victims receiving adequate medical care through operations, vaccinations, and operations.

The Money Wrap-Up

Not everyone has access to the same opportunities in life, and the lack of opportunities could sometimes be detrimental to their future. Therefore, it is essential to give back to the less fortunate whenever possible to help the less fortunate and try to live a comfortable life.
