The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that it would begin this year’s tax filing season on Monday, January 24, 2022. As the IRS starts accepting and processing 2021 federal tax returns, individuals and businesses should begin preparing their tax returns.
The IRS strongly encourages taxpayers to file their tax returns electronically and with direct deposit. This allows taxpayers to receive their tax refunds within 21 days of filing their return if there are no errors with the tax return.
For most taxpayers, except the residents in Maine and Massachusetts, the deadline for filing the 2021 tax return is Monday, April 18. However, those residents who live in Maine or Massachusetts have an extra day to file their return, which is April 19. This is due to the Patriots' Day holiday.
It’s important to file your tax returns as soon as possible, whether you are filing independently or with a tax preparer.
